‘When I’m Lonely’ is the brand new release from Canadian-based singer/songwriter and producer Spence Paull. Released at the very end of last year, it was the fourth single she gifted the world in 2021, so it’s fair to say that Paull had a pretty busy year. ‘When I’m Lonely’ continues in the artist’s signature style, as she effortlessly blends elements of classic 80s synthpop with a sort of big band sound – horns included! It’s even a little jazzy too! Lyrically, Paull deals with the universal feeling of wanting to get in touch with an ex, even when you know it’s a terrible idea. “We all have that one person we think back to when we’re lonely,” she says. An incredible vocal performance takes the tune to the next level, and with plans to release a ton of new music this year, we at Indie Top 39 will be following Spence Paull’s progression closely!
‘When I’m Lonely’ should come with an addiction warning. An incredible track from an immensely accomplished musician.

What does the song mean to you?
‘When I’m Lonely’ describes something so universal: texting or calling your ex when you really, REALLY shouldn’t. Even admitting something you really shouldn’t – like how you miss them, or how you think about them sometimes – is a feeling we’ve all had. I hope people can relate, and live vicariously through my poor decisions.
Tell us about your creative process and how the song came to be?
‘When I’m Lonely’ was born out of a couple of experiences: the first – which is described almost verbatim in the first verse – was running into an ex, and they literally pretended like I didn’t exist. And the second was when that very ex texted that they were thinking about me, and missed me. I immediately thought, “I need to make this into a song”. A couple of lyrics, some music, and some producing later, it was done!
What are your favourite lyrics in the song?
“But this gin in my cup got my lips loose, this is not something I should be telling you, but I’m about to.”
Which Netflix series or movie would you like your music to be featured in?
I would LOVE for my work to be featured in Sex Education. I feel like my music fits really well with the themes and vibe of the show. I think my work would also fit well in a feel-good summer rom-com – it’s upbeat, cheeky, and would compliment the tone of the movie really well.
