“I always feel a looming sense of panic when the weather starts to get warm again.” These are the words of Melbourne-based indie singer/songwriter Ella Sterland, who’s better known simply as Bares. On her brand new single ‘Fruit’, the musician beautifully deals with her anxiety regarding the changing seasons and, in the process, produces one of the silkiest, most soulful little tunes we at Indie Top 39 have heard all year!
Working with her collaborator Renee Stein, the pair have created a lush and melodic soundscape that sucks you in and refuses to let go. Her sound and production bring to mind artists like St. Vincent, H.E.R., and Lorde, but there’s a clear individuality and freshness that she brings to the fore. With a wealth of music already released, there’s more than enough of this insanely talented artist’s music to sink your teeth into!

What does the song mean to you?
‘Fruit’ is my way of explaining the summer-induced panic I feel in the first few warm days when the seasons change. It’s a gentle track about noticing your mental health, and finding ways to get through the day, like buying as many seasonal fruits as possible!
Who do you hope the song resonates with the most?
Living in the Australian climate polarises it’s citizens when it comes to the enjoyment of summer, so this song goes out to anyone who always feels a little anxious at the beginning of summer.
What inspired you to share the song with the world?
Seasonal Affectedness Disorder is a common topic when winter begins, but it isn’t talked about as much with summer, even though there are plenty anxiety-causing elements, especially when you consider the climate crisis. I wanted to release this song to say that it is okay to not love when summer begins, and that the trauma associated with wildfire, Christmas, and bikini season are all valid.
What are your favourite lyrics in the song?
“Why does it never get better? I’m always a mess when you arrive”
I love these lyrics because I always think I’ll be unaffected by the season change, but it creeps up on me every year.
