Emmrose is a Brooklyn-based indie-pop singer/songwriter who holds a special place in the heart of Indie Top 39. We first discovered her music when she released ‘Afterlife’, and have been following her flourishing career ever since. The musician recently returned with a beautifully heartfelt new tune called ‘Thorns’ – and all I can say is that she’s done it again! Personal, intimate, honest, immersive – ‘Thorns’ is truly a gem of a song.
Lyrically, Emmrose tackles feelings of resentment and hurt, but with a strong focus on forgiveness, and finding the power to move on. Joining her on the track is fifteen (yes fifteen!) year old concert viola performer Andrew Jensen, and his performance just adds another layer of richness and complexity to the already full-bodied piece. ‘Thorns’ is the title track of Emmrose’s upcoming EP, and we simply can’t wait to hear what else she has in store for us.
‘Thorns’ is a hauntingly moving and deeply sincere tune from a musician who just gets better and better!

What does the song mean to you?
Lyrically, ‘Thorns’ is one of the most cathartic songs I’ve ever written. Every verse is about a different person in my life with whom I carry some kind of resentment, but want things to change for the better. ‘Thorns’ represent my open wounds; they are the people in my life that continue to hurt me, even if they aren’t in my life anymore.
Who do you hope the song resonates with the most?
Anyone going through a breakup, friendship struggles, or really any kind of relationship loss. I wrote ‘Thorns’ to be a song centered around forgiveness, and a way to move on. A way to look back on past failed relationships, but not giving them power over me, and finally moving on.
Tell us about your creative process and how the song came to be?
I wrote the melody of ‘Thorns’ on my way back from a walk. Some lyrics popped in my head as I was running up the stairs. I immediately rushed to the piano and set the melody to chords, and there was the song!
What does success mean to you?
Success is an interesting concept. I honestly already feel successful. I’m so proud of the little audience I have, and it means the world to me to have such support. The thing about success is that I feel it’s never enough, one can always be more successful in everything. It’s important for me to be happy about where I am, and to be appreciative of all I have.
