sautereau is the brand new musical project of singer/songwriter Chloé Sautereau. Born in Switzerland and now based in New York, she’s just released ‘Conversation Hearts’, and it’s the first official offering under her new artist name. The tune, I have to say, is simply beautiful and entrancing in every way. sautereau blurs the lines between indie-pop, folk, soft-rock – and creates her own dreamy, euphoric sound that truly sounds like no one else I can think of. Sure, she has her influences – Finneas, Carobae, Jessie Reyez, Julia Michaels to name just a few – but there’s a distinct individuality that shines through brightly on ‘Conversation Hearts’.
Still a young artist, sautereau displays a serious knack not just for songwriting but for compelling and authentic storytelling too. As the first single from an upcoming EP that’s scheduled for release sometime next year, we at Indie Top 39 can’t wait to hear what this talented songstress gets up to next!

What does the song mean to you?
‘Conversation Hearts’ is my hope for the glass half full version of this past year. I know it’s not an easy one to find, but it’s one filled with love I wish to spread. This song is about the bittersweet realization of how fast time slipped by, while also feeling like it suddenly stopped. It’s about the frustration of not being able to do what we should have been able to do, but hopefully still acknowledge the good memories made with the few special people we were lucky to have around. It’s the reminiscing of old times in order to look forward to better ones.
The lust for being closer to people, to that special person and your loved ones. It’s about feeling that spark, in spite of the boredom, in spite of the silence, and in spite of the loneliness. Indeed, it’s about letting your heart speak. And then it’s just an extra little bit of sweet, like the candy 😉
Tell us about your creative process and how the song came to be?
‘Conversation Hearts’ was very much a “me writing with my guitar, on my couch in New York looking out my window” kind of song. It was an outlet and came out of me pretty fast. The leaves had turned green outside without me noticing, and there was a bag of ‘Conversation Hearts’ candy sitting on my coffee table since valentine’s day still… The song stuck with me through summer, so I worked on the arrangement back home (Switzerland) with a friend/producer Toby May, exploring and developing the sonic palette for the song.
What are your favourite lyrics in the song?
“I’ll keep playing guitar, on my couch or at the bar, some day til we can say that these were just memories we made.”
It’s hard for me to choose, but I think this line has grown to be my favorite because I wrote it while sitting on my couch but have now been lucky to play it at a bar too, therefore a very full circle moment, and reflects where my hope stemmed from writing the song back in April.
When did you realise that music is what you wanted to do?
I’ve sung forever and always loved writing but realised I really wanted to do both together when slightly later down the line from my first song. I wrote a song for a friend and I was timid to show them but they said about a specific line: “I’ve thought that to myself so many times but never said it out loud.” – That was one of the most humbling moments in my life, because I really realised what music can do for yourself and others. Songwriting is about “getting” people; it’s an outlet for the writer as well as those around us and bringing people together through those emotions is absolutely priceless to me.
