No stranger to the indie-rock scene, Matthew Liam Nicholson returns with one of the most beautiful and poignant tunes that we at Indie Top 39 have heard in a long time! ‘Dusty Bones’ is the follow-up to his incredible previous single ‘The Publisher,’ and has been described as “a heartfelt meditation on grief,” – I simply couldn’t have put it better myself! It’s moving, emotional, heartbreaking, and just an all-around captivating tune from the talented Los Angeles-based musician and composer.
Written after the death of Nicholson’s long time best friend, ‘Dusty Bones’ is filled with warmth and intimacy, as the musician opens his heart and invites the listener to join him, hold hands, and share in the sadness that we’ve all been through at one time or another. Nicholson is currently working on his new Universal Outsider project, and we simply can’t wait to hear it!
‘Dusty Bones’ is one of the most beautiful, heartbreaking, and poignant tunes I’ve heard this year!

What does the song mean to you?
‘Dusty Bones’ was the first song written after the death transition of my long time best friend, Hefe, whom I came to Los Angeles to help look after, for what turned out to be the last month of his earthly life. It was a very intense, heartbreaking and transformative period, which also found me in love with Los Angeles. ‘Dusty Bones’ is dedicated to Hefe who brought me to LA and left me there.
When did you realise that music is what you wanted to do?
That came in stages – I’d realized it enough at 13 to be leading bands from then. But life has many twists and turns and I have “been” various other “things” over the years to survive, including a garden designer and a business owner.
What do you want to achieve in the next 12 months with your music?
Over the coming year, I’ll be releasing much more music that I have been working on for many years. My goals are pretty simple – for many people worldwide to enjoy my music and to further create a sustainable economy for my work. The pipeline between writing and releasing has, for me, been crazy long for too long. I intend to change that and by prolific recording, actualize prolific releasing – and hopefully reduce my pipeline from writing to releasing to a few months, so as to keep more in real-time with my growing audience. Oh and naturally I’d like to mystify millions of souls in the wonders music can share.
