‘When We Were Young’ is the first release of any kind from the Liverpool based synthwave/retrowave trio, The Last Arcade. A nostalgia-filled, warm and alluring tune, ‘When We Were Young’ is about those early, special, care-free days that have come and gone. The friends that we used to love, but somewhere along the way, just simply lost touch with. Dripping with that classic 80’s analog synth sound, The Last Arcade drew inspiration from heavyweights like The Midnight and Michael Oakley for their debut release. The production of the track is superb, and the infectious hooks and killer chorus will certainly make it an instant crowd pleaser. Lead vocalist, Steve McNally, puts on a powerful vocal performance – but that’s to be expected! He is, after all, a former member of the legendary English pop group BBMak. I suspect we’ll be hearing a lot more from The Last Arcade in the not too distant future.
‘When We Were Young’ will take you on a danceable, nostalgia-filled journey down memory lane.
INDIE TOP 39
What does the song mean to you?
The song in part is about those friends who meant the world to you as a kid – the ones you thought would be in your life forever, but who, for whatever reason, you eventually lost touch with and perhaps never saw again. It was nice to finish the story of the song with a message to them. They shared a special part of your life, it felt right to wish them well.
Who do you hope the song resonates with the most?
Obviously I hope the song resonates with everyone! Me and the other guys in the band all grew up in the 80’s so I particularly hope the song would resonate with people of a similar age to us. I think kids of our generation were lucky with the freedoms we enjoyed – knocking at a friends house in the morning, grabbing your bikes and going on an adventure for the rest of the day, no phones or tech, the only rule – be home in time for dinner. I think people of a certain age can relate to those times and this song will hopefully stir up some happy nostalgic memories for them.
What are your favourite lyrics in the song?
“If I don’t see you again, I hope you’re good my friend,
I hope life treats you well, and you made it in the end.”
What does success mean to you?
It’s hard to measure success when it comes to music these days. Obviously we’d love to chart with our music and pull in big crowds when we perform, but at the end of the day it’s really about your music connecting with people. When someone messages you out of the blue to say they heard your song and they love it – that for me is real success.
