“This city’s full of haunted places, these rusty streets I can no longer call my home.” The new single from German based indie quartet, Everdeen, is a powerful and anthemic rallying cry to let go of the past. To, in a sense, embrace burning bridges. ‘Don’t Give Up The Ghost’ is a beautifully layered track, and just becomes richer as it progresses. Intricate guitar work, a driving drum beat and the ethereal, confident vocals of Sümeyra are all on full display, as Everdeen continue to improve and elevate their sound to the next level. Comparisons to the likes of Florence + the Machine and London Grammar will no doubt make an appearance, but there’s something different about Everdeen. I can’t quite put my finger on what it is though. But I’m OK with that. It makes awaiting the release of their full album even more exciting.
‘Don’t Give Up The Ghost’ is a high-powered and dynamic tune from a band that simply gets better and better.
INDIE TOP 39
What does the song mean to you?
‘Don’t Give Up The Ghost’ is about letting go of the past and starting over. It’s about being in a place that only reminds you of bad memories and realizing that there’s nothing keeping you there. It’s OK to burn your bridges – never stop moving forward.
Tell us about your creative process and how the song came to be?
We usually write music collectively as a band. This song started as a guitar riff, (the opening hook,) which we’d been jamming on for a couple of years but it didn’t really click with Sümeyra. One day at rehearsal we were trying the song out again and Ian the guitarist played the chords which would become the pre-chorus and all of a sudden the song fell into place. It was like someone turned on a light switch.
Which Netflix series or movie would you like your music to be featured in?
We love the mood of the supernatural series Dark and it would be a dream come true if they used one of our songs in the series – even though it’s over now. Maybe the director Baran Bo Odar has another series where our music would fit in?
What are your favourite lyrics in the song?
We love the lyrics in the bridge because that’s the core message of the song – set fire to the past, there’s nothing holding you back!
“Let go of those lies that were promised to you then, watch them reignite, up in flames, one step at a time, you will get there in the end, open up the gates.”
