Ferrier is the musical project of Camden based singer/songwriter and producer, Iain Alexander. Originally recorded in his tiny London bedroom, his brand new single ‘As It Goes’ sees the musician put a fresh spin on the indie pop/dance sound, as he essentially creates his own genre that is beautifully coined “euphoric melancholy”. Think of it as a breakup tune that sounds like you’re falling in love. A hazy, synth-filled, summery hit that expertly juxtaposes its lyrics with an upbeat and positive energy. Drawing on inspiration from the likes of The 1975, LCD Soundsystem, MGMT and The Weeknd, Ferrier played around with ‘As It Goes’ for many years before eventually settling on the sound and feel that he wanted for the track. I for one think he’s nailed it, and I can only hope that there’s lots more to come from this extremely talented young artist.
‘As It Goes’ could be the most danceable breakup tune I’ve ever heard. Kudos to Ferrier. Onwards and upwards!

What does the song mean to you?
This song was a long process between writing it and releasing it. I wrote it when I was 19 as one of the first songs I’d ever written so I’ve had it in my head for almost half a decade – mulling it over and putting it through a couple versions. I suppose what it means to me is, it kind of represents the last 4 years of my life and the changes that have occurred both personally and in music. I wrote it after a breakup when I was basically an over dramatic kid listening to emo music – I even slightly cringe at some of the lyrics now – but I didn’t want to change the honesty found in being a heartbroken teenager. I’m able to look back and find new meaning in it now that I’ve matured and my music taste and influences have expanded. The song is an amalgamation of who I was then and who I am now which is cool – it holds a special place in my heart.
Who do you hope the song resonates with the most?
Is it a cop out answer to say everyone haha? I’ve always been a person who loves lyrics, whether ironic and clever or introspective and honest. I find that a lot of the time that’s what brings me back for more with an artist. I want my lyrics to allow someone to understand something in their lives better. I won’t for a second act like I’m spreading some philosophical truths – it’s a breakup tune so if someone’s going through a breakup I hope this song helps them come to terms with the heap of s**t it can be. On the other side of the coin – it’s one for dancing hard in the summer with your mates so crank it high and boogie on!
Tell us about your creative process and how the song came to be?
Making this song was a long process. After writing it 5 years ago, I began the production and recording process 12 months ago whilst also working on other stuff. The song went through many different iterations and sounds before I landed on what it is now. Despite the lyrics being pretty sad and sorry, I wanted it to be a really catchy pop song with elements of indie dance and house. I lent into really hazing out the guitars with loads of chorus and adding in the retro synth sounds to give it a sense of ecstasy. I love pop that uses happy sounding music for the singers misery to ironically drown in. That was the final concept that I ran with when producing the final mix. I like to call it euphoric melancholy.
What do you want to achieve in the next 12 months with your music?
I want to build Ferrier into a band – pull in other musicians to create a collaborative project. I started doing this in my room during lockdown so it’s been a bit difficult to meet other musicians and start something as a group. In my head this was never just meant to be me – I want to be able to play live with a band that are as equally a part of the process as I am. In 12 months that would be the aim I suppose – make this into a live signed band with massive tunes (then headline Glastonbury 2022 of course). If anyone out there wants to get something going let me know. Other than that I just want as many people as possible to hear my music – it would be crazy to have a fan base in Peru or something – that’d be cool.
