Canadian based indie rockers, Justpeoplewatching, are on a mission to spread awareness around issues like mental health, depression and anxiety. Their brand new single, the richly layered and powerful ‘Superman,’ is a melodic and emotive tune that deals with the unrealistic expectations of perfection that we put on ourselves. “I’m a fake with a cape, not even capable of stopping the ringing in my ear, how can I save a life when I can’t even save my own.” Featuring the intricate vocal harmonies of Marc Ferreira and Kira Dawson, ‘Superman’ was recorded at Resonate Studios in Edmonton by legendary rapper and producer, Conor Wharton. Drawing on influences from bands like The Fray and Coldplay to artists like Jack Johnson and Vance Joy, Justpeoplewatching are truly more than just another band. They’re a force for good in the world, and heaven knows we could use some of that right now!
‘Superman’ is a charming and emotion-filled indie rock ballad that masterfully explores taboo subjects. Thank you Justpeoplewatching.
INDIE TOP 39
What does the song mean to you?
Marc Ferreira: Superman is an incredibly personal journey about dealing with the impossible expectations that surround me. I chose to write about Superman because he represents the ideal man – perfect in every way. When I wrote the track I remember coming home from a difficult day of work, I realized that I was not really living the way I wanted to be – I have never really felt alive. I struggled with the new found responsibilities of a career that impacts hundreds of lives. I also struggled with growing up and becoming someone who I wasn’t. I wondered if Superman honestly felt that way as well. The song really speaks about what it is like to try and be perfect all the time. In the end, you spread yourself too thin and you end up accomplishing nothing. You find that you can’t really do anything. I think that I would be a terrible Superman and that’s why it means so much to me.
What do you hope to achieve with this song?
I hope that when people listen to Superman they realize that they are not alone, and that there are so many people who feel this way. Loneliness, I feel, is the true root of evil. I just don’t think that anyone in this world deserves that. So even if one person can listen to Superman and realize that there are more who feel the same, Justpeoplewatching has done its job.
What are your favourite lyrics in the song?
My favorite lyric of the track is “My only kryptonite is the ticking of time and the thoughts running through my brain.” For me, that holds true for everyone. In the end a person in this mindset is their own worst enemy. Nobody can punish me harder than I punish myself.
