Named after NASA’s 1973 robotic space probe of the same name, Los Angeles based duo, Pioneer 11, have created their own unique brand of psychedelic, indie pop space rock.
Written and recorded in 2020, How Dare You is the soundtrack to the dystopian year in which the EP was born. A science-fiction novella that is eerily based in reality.
The EP’s opener, “Run That Cell,” is a trippy, spaced out and echoey track that takes you on a cosmic journey from the comfort of your armchair. Floaty and reverb-filled, “Run That Cell” shows just what Pioneer 11 is all about. It’s the perfect intro for the mind bending sounds that follow.
“Mafia Business” is an incredible reinterpretation of legendary Los Angeles rapper, 03 Greedo’s song of the same name. Dealing with themes of mourning, grief and loss, Pioneer 11 couldn’t pass up the opportunity to reimagine one of their favourite tracks. “We found it pretty powerful and the original instrumental was really psychedelic so it was a natural fit for us.”
There’s a serious Tame Impala vibe to the EP’s third track, “Bummer Man.” A dreamy, hazy, washed out masterpiece that wraps you up in a warm blanket and brings you a hot toddy to boot.
“Shifty Eyed” shows a funkier, more beat driven side to Pioneer 11. Oh, the duo also produce hip hop albums. Did I not mention that? They’ve worked with the likes of Bryson The Alien, Fat Tony and Open Mike Eagle to name just a few. That love and admiration for the genre certainly shines through on “Shifty Eyed.”
The EP’s closer, “Doomsday Plan,” completes the circle that is How Dare You superbly. Another deep, psychedelic exploration through space that is richly layered and features a catchy as hell chorus.
How Dare You is truly one of the most exciting EP’s we’ve heard in a long time, and we wait with bated breath at what Pioneer 11 have next up their sleeve.
