With his first musical release in 2018, titled ‘Mercurial Influx’, Hamburg based producer and visual artist Alith Berndarn, ignited the start of a discography that truly feels unique to him. Aside from the fact that people who know his music, know just how much cosmic ambience it brings in its sound, It seemed evident that Alith Berndarn had a very methodical approach towards how his music is released.
As shown by his debut EP, which shares the same title as his debut single, stood as a rounding-up of sorts, in regards to the music he had made up until that point. Released in 2019, the Mercurial Influx EP was primarily the final product of his 2019 releases.
Fast-forward to the end of 2020, and Alith Berndarn had another six single releases under his belt. And while the first of them, featuring the singer/songwriter Kathana, was supposedly intended to be more of its own standalone thing, the following five tracks foreshadowed the release of Berndarn’s sophomore EP, Lucid Scent.
Along with being spread out evenly to really solidify the buildup towards Berndarn’s second EP, these five singles perfectly showed an evolution in the artists dream-like depth. We were absolutely blown away by not only the impeccable vibe each track offered, but also the versatility shared between each of them. It was safe to say, even before its release, that Lucid Scent was going to stand as an incredibly enjoyable experience.
And coming as a surprise to absolutely no one here at Indie Top 39, it was as enjoyable and as immersive as we’d hoped. Listing the tracks in order of their release in the EP itself, Berndarn remains consistently organised. And by listening to the EP in full, we were once again able to indulge in all of the Alith Berndarn tunes we had thoroughly enjoyed over the course of 2020.
And with the colder, more soulful sound of ‘Right for You’ transitioning into the warmer sounds of ‘Signs’ and ‘Never’, and then reverting back to the former on the final two tracks, it feels as if Lucid Scent musically encompassed the beginning of 2020 to the end, intentionally or otherwise.
This sophomore EP solidifies the musical genius of Alith Berndarn completely, and the sheer level of depth he has injected into each and every one of the five tracks found within feels phenomenally aparrent.
We cannot wait to see just how much further Berndarn can venture with his highly innovative and unique sound. But in the meantime, we will be repeatedly enjoying this awesome new EP.
