Not only is emma miller a fundamental part of Indie Top 39, she is also a fantastic songstress, whose bright, intimate, and downright gorgeous sound came to be in 2017, in the form of her debut single ‘Burning Out’. With this first track, listeners had no trouble getting a sense of emma’s brand of ambient folk, which absolutely oozed with a soul-soaking atmosphere and chilling beauty. This sense of atmosphere was only developed upon in the following years. And in 2019, emma miller collaborated with Cecilia Ebba on a 5 track collaborative EP, titled Winter.
And while, after the release of that amazing EP was only a year ago, emma miller already had her sights on creating the next chapter of her discography in 2020, that new chapter being her very first solo EP, Set Me Down.
With the year of 2020 beginning with a remix of her 2018 single ‘Merry Go Round’, courtesy of Scott Colcombe, this seemed to give a strong enough sense of closure for emma miller to move on to focusing on the creation of her debut EP.
Throughout 2020, listeners were fortunate enough to be gifted with a few teasers for the approaching EP. These teaser tracks were ‘Honey’ and ‘Sail Away’, and both of them were beautiful tunes that showed a further evolution on emma millers musical depth, and make up two out of the five tracks that can be found on Set Me Down.
Opening with the aforementioned ‘Honey’, this EP gets off to a nicely accessible start for those who have been following emma and enjoying her music over the course of the year.
Following ‘Honey’ are two completely new listens, that go by the names of ‘Carried Away’ and ‘Low Light’. The former is a gorgeous balance of whimsical harmonies and beautifully cold and hazy production. As for the latter, ‘Low Light’ is effectively subtle in its sound, and this helps emma miller’s vocals truly shine. We definitely think that this track had to be the most shining example of how effortlessly emma miller can invoke such a deep sense of emotion in her vocals.
Following tracks two and three, we then have the dreamy sound of ‘Sail Away’ to renew the sense of familiarity on this EP. But despite being a track used to tease this project, its sound feels more apt than ever on the vast and heavenly atmosphere that circulates Set Me Down in its entirety.
To close this amazing EP, we have the title track, which ties everything up beautifully with its gorgeous strings and conclusive ambience, all of which blend perfectly with emma’s undoubtedly amazing vocals.
Set Me Down is a beautiful representation of what makes emma miller who she is in a musical sense. It truly feels like a culmination of all of the elements she has used to invoke such a deep sense of feeling in her sounds. And if a piece of work as sensational as this is only her debut solo EP, we are truly excited to see where she ventures next.
