We first discovered a multi-dimensional singer/songwriter Lexi Lemonade who is based in New Jersey when we came across her second single ‘How Could I’. We were blown away by the honesty and originality and we knew we want to get to know her better.
2020 was a tough year and it’s so amazing to see an artist who talks about self-love. Without further ado let us introduce you to super talented and haunting Lexi Lemonade.
Congratulations! You started your career in 2020 and you are about to release your second single. Tell us about your journey up until the release of ‘Drip.’
Thank you so much! Yes, ‘Drip’ was my first release. I started writing and recording demos in my bedroom back in 2015. I was inspired by my need to be creative (and my love for music). My family has always been very much into music .and at the time I was finishing up nursing school. I discovered music was a way for me to escape from the mundane. Every time I made something new it just brought me so much joy. It brought me to another world. That realisation is what led me to want to create more music and actually put it out into the world.
Tell us the inspiration behind ‘Drip’
‘Drip’ is about owning your sexuality, being confident in yourself, owning your power and going after what is it that you want.
LEXI LEMONADE
At the time I was going through what I would call an awakening. During the writing process for ‘Drip’, I was rediscovering myself and rediscovering what makes me feel powerful. It was a really fun track for me to write and produce. It’s 100% me.
How would you describe your sound?
I feel like I’m a blend of genres. I love to play around with harmonies that sound somewhat otherworldly and angelic & cinematic (Drip), but I also like songs that sound raw, unfiltered and emotional (How Could I?). I try not to limit myself when it comes to my music so I really just go off the mood/emotions I want to evoke and build from there.
Lyrics of your latest single ‘How Could I’ are very personal. Can you tell us more about the inspiration for the song?
‘How Could I’ was inspired by my struggle to let go of things or people that I knew weren’t good for me at that moment. Oftentimes I would put others before myself, and realised in doing so I was only hurting myself. I realised that sometimes self-love can be a painful process. You can love something but that doesn’t necessarily mean that it is good for you. And that’s what it’s about. Choosing yourself, and honouring yourself so that you can be the best version of yourself. You can try to be a million things to a million people, but what does any of it mean if you can’t be true to yourself?
Where do ideas for songs come from? Tell us more about your creative process.
When it comes to songwriting I like to go with the flow and let ideas come naturally. I like to produce demo tracks on my computer or listen to some instrumentals on YouTube. From there I will write whatever comes to mind. Sometimes I write about things I’ve experienced or currently experiencing and sometimes I just like to have fun. I find my best songs come from ones that form naturally rather than it being forced.
How did you come up with the name Lexi Lemonade?
So when I was in high school I had this obsession with Lemonade. Literally, it was probably the only thing I drank at the time. My partner started poking fun at me and called me Lexi Lemonade. I honestly just fell in love with the name and it kind of just stuck.
Quite a few people are openly admitting that lockdown made them reflect and look within. Did that have any impact on your songwriting?
Definitely, I feel during this lockdown I went through a huge transformation (and still growing/learning). I really started to look within myself more, I learned how to love and honour myself more and started to implement things in my daily life/routine to help keep me grounded and in tune with myself and my healing. Although I feel very blessed and fortunate for all in my life, this year has been a tough one mentally & emotionally with everything that is going on in the world.

Do you remember the moment you decided that music is what you want to do?
I’ve always admired women in the music industry. I grew up watching Destiny’s Child, Aaliyah, Brittney Spears, etc. and absolutely loved the visuals and the music. I would often imagine myself being up there and performing. However, I was a really shy kid. It wasn’t until I started writing and experimenting with music in my bedroom that I was like, you know what, I’m tired of living in fear, I want to do this for real.
In your latest single you talk about the importance of self-love. How are you feeling about it now compared to where you were a few years ago?
Oh my goodness! I feel like I have grown SO MUCH as a person compared to a few years ago. I have accepted myself the way I am, imperfections and all. I’ve learned to express gratitude for the things that I do have. I learned it’s ok not to be perfect, and the importance of real, genuine friendships vs. trying to force something.
I’m learning to stand up for what it is I want to do and take control of my life (the way I want to live it). I think for so long in the past I would just do things because others wanted me to not really because I wanted to do it. I’ve learned that’s a definite no-no (for my happiness). Of course, I am always learning and growing but I am so proud of the progress that I have made.
What would you say to those who struggle with appreciating/loving themselves?
Don’t beat yourself up about it. Take it day by day. Self-love and healing takes time. It’s something we have to practice daily. You don’t have to look or be a certain way to be accepted. Try to implement things into your daily life that makes you feel good or reminds you of your blessings. My mom would always tell me to write down 5 things every morning that you are thankful for. It can be as simple as having two eyes that allow you to see. Start a gratitude journal or a journal just to gather your thoughts. Daily affirmations are good to help enforce positive thinking. Also realise that everyone has their own separate lives. You don’t know what anyone else is going through, so try not to take things personally if people aren’t kind. You define yourself.
What do you want to achieve with your music?
I feel like music can be healing. I want my music to kind of just be a celebration of life.
I believe we are here to experience life and learn what it means to be human. I hope when people listen they feel free to be themselves, have fun with life, and also to be able to get through the difficult times with a little more ease. I’d love to travel the world and be able to connect with others through my art and my craft.
Music to me is one of the greatest gifts to the world.

Do you have a song, that when you hear it, you’d say, “I wish I’d written that”?
Honestly I don’t know if I have the words to describe just how amazing that song is. It’s so relatable and so so timeless. The instrumentation mixed with her soothing vocals. the song is a masterpiece.
