With the weather changing as rapidly as it is, it is fair to say that the styles of the tunes that we are being blessed with each week are changing as well, to adapt to a more Autumnal vibe.
This week, we have plenty of awesome tunes like that to share with you, each with a unique story to tell. We even have a few awesome debut tracks to get lost in, with the newest ten tracks that make up this week’s New Music Sunday list. So let’s dive right into them.
Track of the Week
Eva Snyder » Transparent
We utterly love the colourfully moody, exotically warm, and unapologetic nature of ‘Transparent’, which feels like a brilliant next step in Eva Snyder’s musical journey.
INDIE TOP 39
After releasing her first batch of tunes in 2017, Nashville-based artist Eva Snyder makes her 2020 return with a brand new single ‘Transparent’, which also serves as her most raw and emotive pop piece to date, as well as a track that heralds the imminent arrival of future tunes, as ‘Transparent’ kicks off an unapologetic new chapter in her musical journey. We utterly love the colourfully moody and exotically warm guitar melody, paired with a harmonising vocal melody from Eva, that gets this track off to an instantly captivating start. Throughout the rest of this awesome tune, Eva sings about her insecurities in a way that feels like an unapologetic diary entry. We are thoroughly excited to see what else Eva Snyder has up her sleeve for the near future.
Borka Balogh » Burden
With a release date in line with that of World Mental Health Day, ‘Burden’ beautifully raises awareness of mental health, and the taboos surrounding it.
INDIE TOP 39
Originally from Budapest, Borka Balogh is an independent artist who has been making noise in the heart of Amsterdam with her dark and haunting indie sound, which feels truly embraced on her newest single release, titled ‘Burden’. Balogh intentionally saved the release of this tune, so that it shared its release date with that of World Mental Health Day. And as the title of this track suggests, the focal purpose behind ‘Burden’ is to raise awareness of mental health issues, and chip away at the taboo that surrounds people who struggle for being ‘too different’. This track’s sentiment is backed up brilliantly by its cold, haunting, and progressive sound, along with Balogh’s own emotive vocals and immersive lyrics.
Charlotte Lansman » Never Forget
‘Never Forget’ was designed to keep the instrumental depth of Charlotte Lansman’s debut single, but favours a more warm and bright atmosphere this time around.
INDIE TOP 39
The soulful sophomore single from London-based artist Charlotte Lansmann. ‘Never Forget’ was designed to keep the instrumental depth and full atmosphere of the first track, but veer away from being too similar to her debut, by favouring a more warm and bright atmosphere and energy. There is definitely something about ‘Never Forget’ that utterly lifts our spirits, thanks to the stylistic makeup of this tune, which feels like a sort of lovechild of Alicia Keys, Sam Fender, and Amy Winehouse. As a result, ‘Never Forget’ is a shining example of Charlotte Lansman’s desire to be versatile with her music, and is both a graceful and epically uplifting tune.
DeCarteret, Bricknasty & Hayden J Barlow » Sunday 21
While many artists tend to play it safe with their debut singles, DeCarteret doesn’t hesitate to go all-out with her experimental blend of neo-soul and pop.
INDIE TOP 39
‘Sunday 21’ is the debut single release from Dublin-based vocalist and songwriter. And while many artists tend to play it safe with their first release, DeCarteret doesn’t hesitate to go all out with her experimental blend of neo-soul and pop. With the help of Bricknasty & Hayden J Barlow, DeCarteret creates a beautifully surreal experience of a tune. With a lyrical emphasis on the issues that affect relationships, the unorthodox, and enchantingly disjointed structure of this tune works really well because of this. There is so much instrumental diversity to this tune in fact, that every second of this spellbinding musical experience feels different. ‘Sunday 21’ is, to say the very least, an incredibly memorable debut single.
Derek Simpson » Naked Forever
‘Naked Forever’ serves as a continuation of Derek Simpson’s newfound softer aesthetic, as well as a deeply human track in its tone.
INDIE TOP 39
Following the release of his 2019 album KiNG SUN, American recording artist Derek Simpson seems to already be teasing a new body of work, with the single releases that have been put out thus far in 2020, the newest of which being ‘Naked Forever’. His most recent singles vouch for a more smooth, indulgent, and stripped-back sound than some of his previous songs, and ‘Naked Forever’ feels like a brilliant example of said smoothness. With the song revolving around the subject of surrendering to one’s own nature, ‘Naked Forever’ feels incredibly human in tone. We absolutely love the indulgence behind this track in particular, and can’t wait to see where Derek Simpson ventures next.
Firesites » Chemicals
The synth-heavy aesthetic behind ‘Chemicals’ shows us an exciting brand-new musical direction for Firesites.
INDIE TOP 39
Being released as one of two brand new singles, ‘Chemicals’ is a deeply ambient, dreamy, and moody tune from Tom Waterworth’s musical alias Firesites. In comparison to some of the tracks found on Firesites’ 2019 EP Transistor, the more electronic, synth-heavy aesthetic of ‘Chemicals’ shows us a brand new and exciting direction that Firesites is following. The reversed effect that is added to the primary synth melody really gives this tune more of a unique edge, especially amongst the discography of Firesites, but it also showed us that there is certainly a lot of versatility behind this artist, and his insane amount of stylistic talent. We can safely conclude that the horizons are only broadening for this awesome artist.
Howlite » Canary
Howlite pumps a great amount of their signature dreamy atmosphere into the softly soaring tune that is ‘Canary’.
INDIE TOP 39
‘Canary’ is the third 2020 single release from the Melbourne-based dreamy indie-pop triad that is Howlite, and is the latest body of musical work to tease their upcoming EP. Howlite pumps a great amount of their signature dreamy atmosphere into this softly soaring tune, which gives off the kind of vibe that is fitting for this transitional time of year. Lyrically, this track explores the sense of balance that affects our relationships, as well as the sense of disconnect, that quite frankly, many of us might be feeling in times like these. As a result, ‘Canary’ is a track that is not only enjoyably ambient but is also one that many listeners will resonate with.
Mehalah Ray » Nevermind
Mehalah Ray’s debut single brings forth a convincingly bittersweet feel and brings forth a clear sense of soul-warming atmosphere.
INDIE TOP 39
‘Nevermind’ is the debut single release from the musical alias of Cambridge singer/songwriter Rachael Clark, named Mehalah Ray. And right away, we could get a very clear sense of the soul-warming atmosphere that marries brilliantly with her stripped-back acoustic sound. With a contextual emphasis on unhealthy relationships, being undermined, and weighing Rachael’s own wants and needs, this also helps ‘Nevermind’ to bring forth a convincingly bittersweet feel. But honestly, the further we went into listening to this track, the more we got lost in its bright and drifting ambience, and we loved every second of that experience.
Mike Nisbet » Red Hot New York
Mike Nisbett effortlessly takes us into the moment of the story of ‘Red Hot New York’ with his fantastic songwriting skills.
INDIE TOP 39
The first 2020 release of folk artist Mike Nisbet, ‘Red Hot New York’ is also the first teaser track for his upcoming album, named I Was A Great Lake, Once, which he recorded over two intense months of lockdown, and is set to release on the 20th November this year. This track tells us about when Mike visited New York City with his wife a few years back, and ‘a story of lovers torn apart’, and through his songwriting, Nike Nisbet manages to have us all on-board with his words. We also love how he manages to add a more Americanised rock-like depth to his folk sound, which makes us really feel like we were there in the moments that this song chronicles.
Telemarkk » Washed Up
‘Washed Up’ is one of the most upbeat tracks in the Telemarkk discography so far, and has a joyful tone which reminds us of those sorely missed nightlife moments.
INDIE TOP 39
‘Washed Up’ is the third 2020 single release from the electronic duo from Southampton that is Telemarkk. By far one of the most energetic and colourful tracks we have heard this week, ‘Washed Up’ even stands out as one of the most upbeat tracks in the duo’s discography so far. A tune that’s about cherishing those special moments with somebody before they are gone, this celebrative sentiment matches perfectly with this track’s joyful tone. There’s also a nocturnal element to this track’s atmosphere that feels akin to all of the luminous bangers you’s pair with a night out, and this does a brilliant job of reconnecting us with those special nightlife moments that we’ve all missed, both lyrically and musically.
