Growing up in Ipswich, Suffolk, Connor Adams grew up listening to some of the bands who serve as big inspirations behind the songs that he writes, creates, and sings today. He would get inspired by bands like Fleetwood Mac, Foo Fighters, and Stereophonics that would lie within his parents’ music collection.
But that only makes up half of the influences that go into the musical work of Connor Adams, as he is the kind of artist who loves to combine the past and the present. In other words, he would later become inspired by more current artists such as Harry Styles, Ed Sheeran, and Sam Fender. As a result, Adams was swift to develop a style that was truly his own.
Another thing to be swiftly developed by Connor Adams was his discography. Directly after testing the waters in 2018 with his wholesome sounding debut single release ‘Adventure’, Adams released his very first EP the very same year. Titled Open My Eyes, the EP garnered a lot of well-deserved praise from the likes of both BBC Suffolk and BBC Introducing.
But while his 2018 releases perfectly laid the foundations for his style, it was the year of 2020 that really seemed to shape what would now be the signature stylistic fusion from Connor Adams, with the more rock-inspired elements of his music becoming more apparent. It was also at this point where a new chapter of Connor Adams’ musical career would dawn upon us, and a very important chapter as well. With his sophomore EP under construction, the Suffolk singer/songwriter began to blossom even more.
The brand new EP would be donned as Devil of the Night, and its cycle began with his first 2020 single release ‘Don’t Play with a Heart’, a track that we adored as a simultaneously groovy and gritty bop which had a depth that really spoke volumes of Connor’s stylistic evolution.
This only became clearer with the following two teaser tracks, ‘Deeper’, and what would later become the title track of the EP. Connor Adams made it clear that by adding more of a rock element to his newfound musical aesthetic, he has created something completely unique, and enjoyable in equal measure.
But these three amazing teasers would only make up half of what the Devil of the Night
EP had to offer; we would be blessed with another 3 completely new tracks. The first of which, ‘Issues’ is the introductory track to the EP. It’s loud and gritty, yet also progressive composition serves as the perfect representation of what this EP is all about in stylistic terms, and is bursting with that vast live energy that will make listeners very eager indeed to witness a track like this in a live performance.
The next new track ‘We’ll Never Be Lovers’ is a perfect blend of slow-burning rock and atmospheric electro-pop. We could feel ourselves just sink into this track completely.
And finally, the last new tune to dive into is titled ‘Reaching Out’, and while we are completely blown back by the awesome rock-soul fusion that Connor Adams has quite frankly championed, it was simultaneously refreshing to hear this track conclude the EP with a softer sound, that felt more true to his earlier work, and it represents perfectly that this incredibly talented artist has tonnes of versatility up his sleeve.
All in all, we feel that Devil of the Night is an incredibly pivotal point in Connor Adams’ musical career, and we are in awe of just how unique this project feels. If 2018 saw this amazing singer/songwriter garner all the well-deserved high praise, we expect that ten-fold for this immaculately engaging and awesome project.
