We believe that in many ways, this week has spread more confusion than clarity amongst a lot of us. But one thing we can absolutely confirm, is that we have been blessed with some amazing new music this week.
We have picked a brilliantly versatile selection of equally brilliant songs to share with you on today’s list, so let’s dive in.
Connor Adams » Deeper
After being so blown away by the powerfully gritty and soulful anthem that was ‘Don’t Play with a Heart’, we were thankful that we didn’t have to wait too long for the next move from artist Connor Adams. This move came in the form of his newest track ‘Deeper’. In comparison to the deep and dark mood of the previous single, ‘Deeper’ takes a different stylistic approach; one that feels more upbeat and carries a lot more groove. The rhythms and layered melodies are incredibly infectious, and got us instantly hooked.
Dlore, Maya Law, Freya Roy & Galli » House That Ain’t a Home
As stated by Dlore themselves, ‘House That Ain’t a Home’ is quite the special collaboration of artists, which include Maya Law, Freya Roy, and Galli. This track was also created as an attempt to raise as much money as possible for Galop; an LGBT+ and anti-violence charity who support victims of hate crime, domestic abuse and sexual violence. The track itself is absolutely beautiful (even when one doesn’t count in the wonderful cause of the song). It carries an emotionally melancholy undertone but ultimately remains an uplifting and gorgeous song.
HOKO » Hellogoodbye
The second single to be released by experimental band HOKO, ‘Hellogoodbye’ is a wonderfully quirky and engaging tune. Paired alongside a very steady and upbeat rhythm, this track easily had us loving it pretty much straight away. We really enjoyed the juxtaposition between the subtle melodies found in each of the verses, and the explosive choruses. But all in all, it is simply a remarkably fun tune to listen to.
Julia-Sophie » breathe
It is safe to say that we were very excited to listen to Julia Sophie‘s debut EP y?, which had been released on Friday. The introductory song to this four track EP, is indeed none other than ‘breathe’; a track that certainly showed that Julia-Sophie wasn’t afraid to get her EP off to an instantaneously energetic, colourful, and wondrous start. It was also a brilliant way to set the narrative of all of the heartache and bitter pills to swallow that sometimes surround a relationship. JYLDA » Jeopardy
Another bit of music that we have touched upon already this week would be JYLDA’s newest single ‘Jeopardy’. This artist got a lot of our attention back in 2019, when she poured her innovation into the creative EP that was Twitch. However, ‘Jeopardy’ serves as an ever bigger evolution in JYLDA’s creative prowess, and shows to be another step in carving out her highly innovative pop aesthetic.
Paperwing » Clouds
After enjoying Paperwing’s previous single ‘Himalaya’ not too long ago, it was great for us to be able to listen to her brand new release, titled ‘Clouds’. This newest track seemingly has more of a rhythmic atmosphere than the ambience of ‘Himalaya’, but also keeps that very vast and cosmic aesthetic, which really nicely ties together each of her tracks that seem to be part of her newest record cycle.
Paul Babe » Lasso
With his debut single, Paul Babe swiftly establishes his unique style with ‘Lasso’. We feel that this track does an exceptional job of fusing ambient electro-pop sounds and instrumentation with an almost pseudo-country aesthetic. We are also big fans of how this track progresses into its later half, which carries a much more layered and soulful melody. The fact that this is only Paul Babe’s debut track just goes to show that there is most likely a tonne of innovation up this artist’s sleeve.
Sebastian Mouritsen » The Wind
The first release of 2020 from Danish musician Sebastian Mouritsen; ‘The Wind’ feels spellbindingly spiritual, nocturnal, and almost folk-like atmosphere in its sound. It’s the kind of track that is both immersive and dramatic, and this is mostly thanks to the track’s stellar sense of progression. This track is undoubtedly gorgeous with its blend of acoustic guitar and orchestral strings, and we were blown away by it.
Sugarwolf » Changes
And last (but certainly not least) is our track of the week, titled ‘Changes’. This is the third single to be released by the Northern Irish four-piece Sugarwolf, and their only release of 2020 thus far. It is a totally dynamic anthem that is jam-packed with attitude, heaviness, and soulful energy. The echoing melodies do all the more to help elevate the explosive atmosphere of this bad-ass tune, and quite frankly, we cannot get enough of it!
