With things quietening down in the world of mainstream music this week, it was marvellous to find that the indie music scene is still going strong, with countless exciting new releases this Friday.
Here are 9 that we think really blew us away. To celebrate International Women’s Day, we thought it fitting to explore some of the amazing female-led musical talents we all had the pleasure of discovering.
Borka Balogh » did i just let u in?
Starting off with this gorgeously haunting track with an exceptionally cold atmosphere. The echoing guitar licks of this song instrumental, along with Borka Balogh’s beautiful, and almost folk-like vocals, make “did I just let u in?” an incredibly indulgent and immersive listen, but one that really stays with you long after the song ends.
Flecks » You Bet I Would
From the moment I listened to the retro-style electronic beat of this track, we were hooked on “You Bet I would” by Flecks. This track also has awesomely festival-ready energy and pace, that definitely reminds us of a warm summer evening. This will most certainly be one to save to your 2020 summer playlists.
Greentea Peng » Ghost Town
We were highly impressed by Greentea Peng’s 2019 EP RISING. However, it seems that this highly talented artist is taking things a step even further in the right direction for 2020, shown by this newest single. “Ghost Town” takes thing in a more reggae-inspired route, but doesn’t fail to retain that signature Greentea Peng aesthetic that we all love so dearly.
Haarlo » Flicker
This track has an awesomely steady and consistent electronic energy to it, one that reminds us of a fair bit of the likes of Robyn or Two Door Cinema Club’s newer material. To elaborate on this, “Flicker” has an incredibly catchy, and even nostalgic atmosphere that reminds us of all of the golden moments of the late 2000s.
Hazel English » Combat
The choice of melodies used in Hazel English’s “Combat” is absolutely spellbinding. Rarely does a track carries an atmosphere as fully manifested as this one. With a similar style to perhaps Lana Del Rey, this serene anthem is an absolutely beautiful listen. And it goes without saying that it’s indulgence value it absolutely paramount.
Loose Fit » BLACK WATER
One of our favourite tracks this week to have a far more raw and authentic sound, Loose Fit’s “BLACK WATER” remains highly interesting and memorable, without the need for whacky effects or strong atmosphere. The true uniqueness of this track is the incredible quirkiness it carries with animated vocals and experimental use of guitar and bass.
midori jaeger » Forest
Continuing the theme of indulgent tracks, midi jaeger’s “Forest” is perhaps amongst the most indulgent of the bunch. The vocals have so much range but are consistently soft throughout. This, paired with an equally soft production that is cold in its tone, make this tune an immensely intimate listen.
Millie Turner » Jungle
The style of this track instantly reminds us of Lily Allen. However, the production behind this track feels far more current and seems to us like it is already ready to become a chart-topping hit. On top of this, it has brilliantly upbeat energy and indeed feels like another festival-ready track.
NRVS LVRS » Far Away
Lastly, we go from a very current-sounding production to an incredibly nostalgic one. “Far Away” has an almost 80’s post-punk inspired electronic instrumental. However, it is still as much of an accessible track as it is enjoyable. In a musical age where retro electronic instrumentals are making something of a comeback, this latest track from NRVS LVRS has really got this style down to a fine thread.
